Tuna steaks with onions

I returned from the fishmongers with 2 tuna steaks and, instead of grilling them as usual, I looked through my cook books to find an alternative recipe.

This recipe is very tasty and comes from Júlio Pereira's Gastronomy of Madeira. Madeira, a Portuguese island off the coast of Morocco, is known for having a huge variety of fish and shellfish in it's waters and the locals take advantage of it.

There is no side dish recommendation. We had it with boiled potatoes and french beans.

Serves: 2 persons.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tuna steaks
  • 2 medium onions, halved and sliced
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 bay leaf, crushed
  • 150ml white wine
  • oregano to taste
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • olive oil to taste
Method:
  1. Marinate the tuna steaks for at least 1 hour in the garlic, bay leaf, wine, oregano and salt & pepper. I turned them half way through the marinating time to make sure both sides were properly marinated.

  2. Heat olive oil in a frying pan and fry the steaks until golden on both sides. Reserve.

  3. Add the onions and tomatoes to the frying pan and cook on a low heat until the onions are cooked. The recipe did not mention using the marinade but I thought it would be a waste so I added the marinade to the frying pan as well.

  4. When the onions are cooked, add the tuna to the frying pan and cover to warm up the fish for a couple of minutes.

  5. Serve immediately.
